Driving Miss Kathy (Day 1)

On Saturday, June 30, Kathy, Thor, Faithanne, me and their 2 cats set off in the truck to drive from Phoenix, AZ to Evansville, Indiana. Kathy's sister lives there and she and Faithanne were moving in with her.

So first, we had to whittle down all of Kathy's belongings to fit in the back of the Toyota. Then Gary tied everything down, covered it with a tarp, and tied it down again.  All of our suitcases we needed for the trip, including all the cat stuff and toys for Thor had to go in the cab.  The Toyota's king cab is the absolute biggest of any other truck.  Even so, it was cramped!!!

Our plan was to start out at 4am so FaithAnne and Thor could sleep for 4-5 hours (that's when Thor normally gets up). So I put Thor's carseat in rear facing so he was laying down.  But when we woke Thor up and he realized that there was something cool going on, he did not fall back to sleep. At all.  Instead he screamed his head off because he was rear facing again and he had a taste of what it was like to sit up and see what was going on.  The cats had been drugged, but were still awake enough to cry.  About 2 hours outside of Phoenix poor FaithAnne began puking her guts up and didn't stop.  She has always had problems with motion sickness. During previous trips, she usually only puked once or twice, but this was every 30minutes to an hour.

After 3 hours of driving, we were outside of Holbrook, AZ.  Faithanne had 3 bags of puke by her feet and was dry heaving, the cats were squalling, and Thor hadn't stopped screaming since we put him in his car seat.  Kathy and I looked at each other and laughed--seriously, what else could we do? If we stopped the car, FaithAnne stopped throwing up, but Thor couldn't sleep.  If we drove, there was a chance that Thor would finally fall asleep, but FaithAnne got sick.

It took us about 8 hours to get to Albuquerque.  There I gave up on Thor sleeping and turned his carseat around. We had bought every kind of anti-nausea med or contraption we could think of, but Faithanne was still sick. And then Thor fell asleep.

We finally made it to Amarillo, Texas where we stopped for the first night.  We tried to take Thor swimming because that usually helps his mood. We got rained out, but not before Thor fell and hit his face on the pool deck. Then  he amused himself by chasing the kittys and trying to eat everyone's shoes (ick!).

The tarp was not holding up very well. It was starting to fray around the edges. The room was mostly clean, but very very cramped for all of us. Thor refused to sleep for longer than an hour by himself in his port-a-crib.  He seemed uncomfortable, so I brought him into bed with me where he fell asleep and kicked me every few minutes and cats tried to curl on my face. Maybe day 2 would be better.

  1. Bwaqh-ha-ha! I am sorry to laugh at your pain but that is one of those stories when you think, "This could be a movie it is so bad"
